Patients Coming Off Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing these treatments should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Experts suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.

"It felt as if something activating and you become starving," said one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing behavioural support.
